The Front Lawn

Let’s start off with the front lawn. Do you have your spots in your lawn where there’s no grass? Crabgrass? I would clean those areas out and either plant seed or put down some sod. It won’t cost much, just some labor. A good clean vibrant lawn is very attractive to potential buyers. And don’t forget to do edging on the grass. When you get the edging done, which can take some time, it’s very simple to maintain with a string trimmer. What it does is give a good clean look that buyers love to see.

How is your front door

Is it old and wooden with a crack or two? Is it in good shape but just looks a little dingy? How about refinishing the wood stain if that’s what it has or putting a fresh coat of paint on it? While you’re at it, either polish the hardware or replace it with something that looks a lot nicer? If it’s in really bad shape consider replacing the door with a new one. Look for a good quality energy efficient door, because this is not a place to skimp on costs. You really should buy something a little bit nicer than a $200 steel door. After all, you only get one chance to make that first impression. Right?

How about outdoor lighting?

You can use Pathway lights, there’s many different variations of lighting poles, some with flower pots built in. And many wall mounted solar lights that you can have. Remember, if you don’t know what you’re doing, hire an electrician.

Does it need a bath?

You look at your house everyday, and you may not notice that it’s just plain dirty. Take a good close look. Many times homes have a layer of dirt all over the siding. So get out the pressure washer and give it a bath. While you’re at it take a look at the areas that don’t get much sun. They probably have some green mold growing. You can either power wash those away or they have chemicals that you can spray on with a garden hose which will wash away the green stuff. This is much easier than standing on top of a ladder with a power washer.

The Roof

Speaking of ladders and power washers, have you looked at your roof? Is it dirty or stained? Whatever you do, do not power wash it. You’ll wash years of roofing life off with a power washer. If it really bothers you to see stains on your roof, there are companies that do roof shampooing. This is a much better alternative. And you can make your house look more presentable and potential buyers.
