Get Flat. Recently I received a call from someone who was ready to move to an active adult community. During the conversation, I asked him why he wanted to make the move. His answer was –
We Need To Get Flat
He proceeded to tell me that he has a 3 bedroom colonial. Their master bedroom is on the second story, living areas on the main floor, and the laundry and his home office in the basement. And the stairs are wearing him and his wife out. So they decided it was time to get flat.
What they meant was they were ready to move to a home with no stairs to climb. And that makes a lot of sense. Let’s face it. When we get older and various body parts don’t operate as well as they did when we were younger, we need to adapt our living space. Sure, when we were young, we wanted the bedrooms upstairs, but no longer. After all – stairs are not our friend anymore!
People that read this blog are like me and Bunny. We are getting older. And if you’re looking at this blog, you may very well be looking to make a similar move yourself. And most of the adult communities have single level living.
As an aside, there are a few adult communities which have condos on the first and the second level. And the second floor is not serviced by an elevator. I wonder who the rocket scientist who thought up that idea is?
But what if you are not ready to move out of the family home yet? How can you get flat?
Here are a few options that you may consider:
Install a personal elevator
Install a motorized stair lift system
Move the master bedroom to the first floor by repurposing a room or the garage
Add a master bedroom suite addition
But if you decide that it’s time to sell the big home and move to an adult community, we can help. After all – we are Realtors. So call us – Bunny and Art Reiman at 732-598-7700. Or visit us online at www.55plusinmonmouth.com
