Where To?
They’re moving into smaller houses, larger houses or just plain moving.
Some of us want to move into larger homes because now we can afford a larger home. Or maybe they want to make room for extended family to move in with them.
Others are moving into smaller homes. Possibly to reduce expenses (energy costs, taxes) or into a home that requires less maintenance.
Why?
Still others move to be closer to family. Face it – as we get older we may need assistance from our family. And we want to be nearer to them. And we’re at the age where we quite often have grandchildren. Speaking for myself, I want to be a big part of my grandchildren’s lives. A recent study has found that in the past year, 4.2 million retirees have moved. Two thirds expect to move one more time. And 29% of us have moved to be nearer to their family. As Realtors, we hear clients tell us all of the time that they want to be near to the children and grandchildren. They need to help watch the grandkids and drive them around. I call myself “Papa-Uber” since I drive the kids around so much.
Many others simply want to move to a warmer climate. And once they’re there, they realize that they miss the family and decide to move back.
Others decide that it’s time to move into an active adult community. Think about the advantages. Virtually no exterior maintenance on the homes. Someone else cuts the grass. Someone else makes the snow go away. If the home has stairs, it’s almost always for the second or third bedroom. You’ll be surrounded by people in your generation. These are people you can relate to and have conversations with. And there are activities to keep you occupied and to keep your mind active.
