Are you in an older home? If yes, you may have some older, outdated décor in your bathroom. You know, the Avocado Green, Blue or Harvest Gold tub, sink and toilet?
If you have these, you have lots of company.
Changing the toilet to a modern color (white) is pretty easy, most handymen can do it. Changing the sink is easy, most would change the vanity also. The tub, well, the last thing you want to do is remove and replace a tub. But there are companies that will re-glaze (paint) the tub. It’s not very expensive. And if you’re adventuresome hardware stores sell a DIY kit. Or have a company like BathFitters come in and put a plastic liner over the tub.
But what about the floor?
There are many available materials you can use. Some are good to use, others you probably shouldn’t use. Remember – water will get on a bathroom floor. So avoid anything that has gaps that will let water into and under the flooring. Water can and will ruin the sub floor. Avoid carpets, laminate floors, hard wood floors and vinyl squares. Use ceramic tile and it’s derivatives. Use sheet vinyl and seal it well against the tub and around the toilet.
Next take a close look at the entire bathroom. Look at the door hardware and don’t forget the hinges. Odds are good they have a coat of rust and should be replaced. Is the door knob worn and tarnished? Change it out. What about the medicine cabinet? The towel racks and the toilet paper holder? If the overhead light fixture is metal, it’s probably rusty also.
A quick overhaul of the bathroom will not only make it look nicer, but it will help the home sell quicker and for more money when it’s time.
